Ahmedabad: More than hundred fish died due to insufficient water in Ghodasar lake

Over 100 fishes have died in the Ghodasar Lake due to insufficient water in the lake. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) health department team on Tuesday removed the fishes.

"Water in the lake is evaporating due to high temperature. We have sent a water sample to check the lake's Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) level also. We will come to know the result in a day," said Dr Tejas Shah, deputy health officer, south zone, AMC. "Our team is at work to remove the dead fish from the lake."

The same lake in July 2017 witnessed the death of over hundreds of fish. Despite having faced this in the past, the AMC failed to notice the low-level of water during the ongoing lake desilting programme. Environmentalists believe that drainage and toxic water could be the reason of death at large.

"There is possibility that drainage water is being released in the canal illegally. Insufficient water could be the reason, but we cant ignore of the possibility of toxic water. Many times, due to low oxygen', aquatic life has been damaged in city. The authority is responsible for that. They are not inspecting the lake regularly," said environmentalist Mahesh Pandya.
