Waghmare mostly used to hang around with his friends who had ties to Sri Ram Sene. Waghmare, claimed he was brought to Bengaluru on September 3, 2017 where he was trained to use an airgun. According to reports, so far he hasn't shown any remorse for his action.

He said he was taken to Gauri Lankesh’s house for reconnaissance and taken to the house on another day, but she was already inside. He added: “On September 5, I was given the gun around 4pm by the biker and we went to her house in the evening. We arrived at the right time. Gauri had stopped her car in front of the gate and was opening it from inside when I approached her. I coughed lightly and she turned towards me. I pumped four bullets into her.”
