Jaipur: MGNREGA workers’ son makes it to IIT-Bombay
Son of MGNREGA workers, Sunil Kumar Meena of Nagalmina village, Mahuajhotwara post of Doussa district, has made it to India’s elite engineering institution IIT by securing 245 marks and AIR-4 rank in ST category and AIR-347 in general category in JEE-Advanced 2018 results of which were declared recently.
Sunil while studying in Hindi medium private school about 5km from his native village secured 94.50 % in 10th and 97.40% in the 12th standard with scoring 100 per cent marks in hysics, chemistry and mathematics. It was at that time he thought of trying IIT entrance exams. After he failed in the first attempt, principal of private school Vijay Jhalani advised his father to send him to Kota for coaching.
With weak economic background, it was impossible for his father to arrange money for his expenses in Kota.
But like son, the father was also determined that he will help achieve his son’s dream of becoming an engineer. So, the father decided to mortgage his agriculture land and took loan to pay for his expenses in Kota. Speaking on his study strategy, Sunil said he did homework given to him from institute regularly and studied for 9 to 10 hours per day. He used simple mobile to speak to his parents and avoided social media and net surfing. ‘I got everything in Kota, the faculties here were always ready to help, and the study material was very good. I got an opportunity to study with talented students from all over India.”
Telling about his future plans, Sunil said he wants to be an IAS after engineering degree in computer science or mechanical branch from IIT Mumbai or Delhi. ‘My aim is to go for administrative services after IIT’, he said, adding he wants to help the students who are talented but are economically weak.
Nearly 1,50,000 students from across the country enrol in the 40-odd coaching institutes in Kota, which is known as India’s coaching capital, every year to prepare for the highly competitive entrance examinations for different professional courses.
