Khelo India? Haryana govt wants their athletes to pay one third of their earnings to state

Haryana government in a baffling decision has ordered their athletes to pay one-third of their earnings from professional sports or commercial endorsements to the Haryana State Sports Council. According to the circular issued on April 30, 2018, this amount will be used to develop sports in the state.

According to ANI, athletes who are employed in any department of the State Government or any other government bodies will be given extraordinary leave (without pay) to take part in the tournaments and they will have to deposit a third of their earnings via these competitions.

This same talk of pay cut had resulted in Haryana government cancelling a felicitation event for their 22 athletes who had won medals at 2018 Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast in Australia.

Wrestler Geeta Phogat in an interview with Times Now said, "It is understandable if this new rule is applied to cricketers since they earn a lot from the sport as well as through endorsements. However, from athletes from sports such as wrestling, kabaddi and boxing etc., this is extremely disappointing. 33% is a huge amount and in such a case, what will remain with the athlete?"
