Cops crackdown on traffic offenders earns Gujarat High Court praise

After being at the receiving end of the Gujarat high court's ire for sometime, both, the city police and the AMC for a change earned praise from a division bench for their work on enforcing parking rules and smoothening the traffic flow in the city.

The court observed that the city police had done some good work but warned that it needed to continue if results were to be sustained. It said following the cops initiative to rid the roads free of illegal parking, they had got very good feedback from the citizens. The court warned them not to let down the citizens and that it would take only a few days of lax attitude to bring down all the good work.

The court also observed there was a need for more and better public parking and public transport, and that the state and civic body should think in this direction. "If needed necessary changes should be brought into the rules and there was a need for updated rules for town planning and vehicle registration," said the court.

It also observed that the AMC had issued permission to restaurants and hotels without taking into consideration the parking space and that in the future when permissions were granted the civic body should ensure that at least 50% of the area of such establishments should be reserved for parking.

On the issue of potholes in the city, the AMC informed the court that they had approached IIT Powai and Gandhinagar for technical help and a report in this connection would soon be submitted following which action will be taken.
As far as stray cattles were concerned, the court said that action needs to be taken as the problem was restricted to few pockets.

The state government following an earlier query informed the court that it was in the process of trying to bring out a draft regulation to control the number of cars plying the roads under the services of Ola and Uber but it needed permission of the Central government for the same.
