Ahmedabad: Demolition drive frees over 3K sq mt in central, new west zones

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in its demolition drive on Saturday freed a space of 1,392 square meters from encroachment by demolishing 27 illegally constructed units and 31 temporary sheds starting from Prabhat Chowk crossroads to Ratna Park bus stand in the new west zone.

In the central zone, 40 temporary sheds and around 247 encroachments were demolished thereby freeing 2,500 sq mt of public space. Across the city, a total of 2,091 encroachments were removed on Saturday alone. The civic body has lifted 56 laris, 17 stalls and 2,018 miscellaneous goods from the model roads.

The rigorous implementation of the demolition drives comes after the Gujarat high court slammed the civic body over the traffic woes the citizen undergoes due to encroachments.

"Ward inspectors will keep a vigil on the sites from where we have removed encroachment. Also, there is a need that locals must be aware of the same and they should leave the margin space of footpath and of the town planning road. We will continue our drive to widen the roads," said Chaitanya Shah, estate officer of the new west zone.

However, the Congress has alleged that the authority is stealing the livelihood of street vendors. "The drive lacks policy implementation. It's been four years that the Street Vendors Policy has been decided and announced but civic officials have never done any kind of survey for the existing street vendors," said Surendra Baxi, senior Congress leader.

"This drive is not acceptable as they are making people jobless — the poor people have been snatched off their livelihood. The high court has asked to make arrangement for traffic flow for better roads. Before shooing the vendors, they must provide them alternate options — which is mentioned in the policy," said Baxi.

'DRIVE A FAILURE'

  • Cong chief Amit Chavda said the drive is a failure of the government to make a proper policy and implement the existing one

  • Chavda alleged that BJP permitted illegal construction in the name of development

  • Himmatsinh Patel referred to the drive as AMC’s mismanagement
