Bihar shelter home horror: He may be a criminal, but he needs treatment, say cops on Brajesh Thakur's hospitalisation

Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, is in the hospital ward inside the district jail, The Economic Times reported on Monday.

The report, quoting police officials, said that Thakur has been lodged in hospital for slip disc, high blood sugar levels, and fluctuating blood pressure that can lead to a heart attack.

“If doctors say keep him in jail hospital, what can we do? He may have done any crime, but that does not mean we do not give him proper treatment. That is his right. What if he dies – then you will say he died as part of some conspiracy,” Muzaffarpur Jail Superintendent, Rajiv Kumar Jha told the daily.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Friday he felt ashamed and a sense of guilt, two months after reports of 34 girls being raped over a period of time in a state-funded shelter home in Muzaffarpur shocked the country.

He called for a punishment that would ensure no one would dares to commit such crimes. He promised the guilty would be punished and said, "The crime has left us with a sense of shame and guilt. We want the CBI probe to be monitored by the Patna High Court."

Instances of sexual exploitation of the inmates of "Balika Grih" run by NGO Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti were reported by Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in June. Altogether 42 girls were lodged at the facility at that time.

The Janta Dal (United), however, asserted that Nitish Kumar would not resign and said it was ready for a Supreme Court-monitored probe into it.

The JD(U) said that Nitish Kumar had written to the Patna High Court for monitoring the probe into the case and asserted that the party was ready for such a probe by even a Supreme Court-monitored panel.

The party also asserted that the Bihar government acted against the accused swiftly and, as per the wish of RJD and other opposition parties, sought a CBI probe into the incident.

He charged that the opposition parties wanted "anarchy" and "jungle raj" back in Bihar by replacing JD(U) and Nitish Kumar.
