Kerala government gives Rs 2 lakh to lynching victim’s kin

Kerala Labour Minister TP Ramakrishnan on Saturday handed over financial aid of Rs two lakh to the family of Manik Roy, a West Bengal migrant worker, who was beaten to death by a mob at Anchal in Kollam district on the suspicion that he had stolen a rooster.

Terming the incident which led to the death of the workers as a disgrace to the state, Ramakrishnan said that such tendencies would be curbed and the government would not tolerate such incidents.

On June 24, Manik Roy was returning home after buying chicken when he was attacked by a mob suspecting him to be stolen the chicken. He died on July 14 following the injuries he sustained on his head during the attack.

An official release quoted the minister as saying that even though Roy did not register in AAWAS project which provides free medical treatment of Rs 15000 per year and insurance coverage of Rs two lakh for accident death covering all the migrant workers, the Kerala government considered his as a special case and granted Rs two lakh. He said that AAWAS is the first-of-its-kind project in the country for the welfare of the migrant workers who are considered as guest workers in Kerala.

Ramakrishnan also announced that his government would be implementing the Apna Khar project which aims at developing hygienic and safe rental accommodation for migrant workers in Kerala and it would be launched by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on August 12 at Kanchikode, Palakkad.
