Old Gurugram to get metro soon, ease traffic jams

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is likely to begin work on connecting Old Gurugram with Metro soon. The Haryana government wants the extension work to be initiated at the earliest to avoid traffic jams in the urban part of Gurugram during peak hours.

The walled city of Gurugram has been awaiting Metro connectivity for a few years now. As the city lacks a robust public transport system, people staying in the old Gurugram use other means like auto rickshaws or their personal mode of conveyance, to reach their nearest Metro station. The heavy inflow of traffic on key roads connecting the old part with the new, from 8 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 9 pm which is peak office hours, chokes them. Jams are a regular feature during this time in Gurugram. To prevent inconvenience due to snarls, the DMRC has been asked to bring Metro to the walled city.

The government is likely to submit its Detailed Project Report to the DMRC for the purpose by October. Once it is done, the DMRC will start with the funding of the project which will be followed by groundwork. Residents of Gurugram, meanwhile, want that the expansion project sees the light of the day.

Harried with regular snarls in the city in the morning and evening, they want the crumbling traffic infrastructure to breathe. "It is a pain to drive from Old Gurugram till HUDA City Centre Metro Station. It takes forever to reach because there is so much traffic in the morning," said Rishi Chopra, a resident of Sector 56. "The DMRC and the state government should ensure that Metro connectivity is done at the earliest. We need respite from this daily struggle of traffic jams," said Sandeep Ahuja, another Gurugram resident.

Meanwhile, passenger services on the Lajpat Nagar-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of the Delhi Metro's Pink Line will commence from Monday, August 6. This stretch is part of the 59 km-long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line) which falls under the Phase-III network of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The Lajpat Nagar-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of Delhi Metro's Pink Line will be flagged off for passenger services jointly by Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on August 6.
