Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation panel approves Rs 82 crore for new water treatment plant

Keeping in mind the need for water in the city, the water and sewage committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sanctioned a work for new water treatment plant of 300 MLD at Kotarpur. The cost of construction and operation and maintenance for five years is approximately Rs82.39 crore.

"City's area has been expanded and many housing units are coming up in city. In the newly added area, there is still the problem of water connectivity by AMC. Keeping in mind the east zone and newly developed area, we have decided on a water treatment plant," said Rashmin Shah, chairman of water and sewage committee, AMC.

"Our aim is to provide potable water to all the affordable houses which are under construction at present. The water treatment plant will be ready at the cost of Rs82.39 crore including five years of operation and maintenance," added Shah.

At present, the civic body is treating water at existing water treatment plant of Kotarpur around 650 MLD. Now, with this new treatment plant, it will provide water to east and north city.

However, despite water availability from Shedhi and Narmada canal, the civic body will continue taking groundwater. For the newly constructed VS Hospital's building will have two borewells for the water. The committee has approved work worth Rs 34 lakh for two borewells in the premises of the hospital.
