Gujarat University suspends three students for ragging Dalit at HL College

The Gujarat University has suspended three students of HL College of Commerce involved in the ragging incident in which a Dalit student had tried to commit suicide. The varsity in a release said that the Anti Ragging Committee of the college has submitted its report in connection with the incident and the varsity has decided to suspend the three. The varsity has further suspended the enrollment as well as the right of the students to appear for any exam of the varsity. The suspension will apply to all academic activities, the release clarified.

The matter concerns the suicide attempt by Gopal Mahida, a first year B.com student of HL College of Commerce who consumed phenyl after being unable to stand the harassment by the three students- Kshitij Desai, Jagmal Rabari and Jayesh Desai. Mahida had alleged that the three students hit him, abused him using casteist language and at one point of time even pulled down his pants. 

The education department had ordered an inquiry into the matter after the incident came to light. Mahida is admitted to VS Hospital and is recovering. After a complaint was filed, Mahida had once again got threat calls from two people who had warned him of dire consequence if he did not withdraw the case. Mahida when questioned about why he hadn't approached the Anti Ragging Committee of the college said that he had first approached the cops who had asked him to file an application and not an FIR.
