Mob Lynching: CM Vijay Rupani asks cops to act tough

All district Superintendents of police (SPs) and Deputy Commissioners of police (DCPs) in Gujarat will now have to take tough measures against the accused people for being involved in mob lynching cases. 

The cops have been appointed as nodal officers in their territory to deal with such cases with utmost sincerity. The home department of the state government made this announcement on Saturday.

The department said the Gujarat government have been very serious about the increasing number of cases across the nation.

"The Supreme Court, in its benchmark orders in the different cases of mob lynching, has cleared that no one has a right to take the law in their own hands. The court has passed several directions to curb the cases of mob lynching. The court has directed the state governments to act seriously in such cases and Gujarat government has decided to implement the same," the release said.

"All the DCPs and the SPs are appointed as nodal officers in their areas and will have to act efficiently and strictly against mob lynching cases. Those who arouse sentiments of people by provocative speech, writing or pictures would be acted against under the section 153(a) of IPC," the department further mentioned.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had directed the senior police officials to frame an efficient policies to control the cases of mob lynching. Rupani had called a special meeting of senior officers across the state in August in Gandhinagar while he made this order.
