2,500 schools exist only on paper: Gujarat board member

A member of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) on Friday raised questions over 2500 ghost schools, schools that only exist on paper. Dr Priyavadan Korat drew the boards attention towards 2500 grant-in-aid and non-grant-in-aid schools across the state that exist only on paper but not phsyically. He also alleged that permission to start a school depends on the money paid by the owners.

"Nearly 2500 schools in the state are only on paper but have been non-operational phsyically for many years. For example, Vivekandanda high school in Ahmedabad had got permission to start a school five years ago but now the same premise has been converted into an appartment. Last year there were 2850 such schools out of which 350 schools have been permanently shut. But there are 2500 more schools which do not function on their location," Korat said.

Further he alleged that there are nearly 250 schools which have been given a nod after an appeal. "This means that the education department rejects schools then after schools pay good money, permission is being granted to them. This affects good schools as well."

Inquiry should be made before results : Interestingly, the board meeting also had discussion on recent cases of students who scored well in all subjects but failed in one or failed in all subjects but scored nearly full marks in one subject.

"We have demanded that in such suspicious and unique cases, inquiry should be made before making marksheet." There is no point to delay the process.

Instructions in Sanskrit paper should be in Gujarati: Members on Friday also raised concern of students appearing for Sanskrit exams as they faced difficulty in understanding the instructions written in Sanskrit. "Students face lot of difficulty when the instruction is printed in Sanskrit. Hence this year, instructions will be in Gujarati whereas the paper style will change next year."
