No work, no pay: Rajasthan Govt to employees

Agitating state government employees will not be entitled for pay during the strike period. The state government toughening its stand released order on Friday evening to regularise the mass absence of employees by grant of Extra Ordinary leave.“The leave has been granted on doctrine of ‘no work no pay’. Extra ordinary leave shall not be counted for increment, qualifying service and any other purpose,” said ACS finance, Mukesh Kumar Sharma. 

The decision followed warning from the state home minister Gulab Chand Kataria against any disruption by agitating employees during prime minister’s scheduled visit at Ajmer on Saturday. The minister’s warning followed the call of the ministerial employees federation to raise their demands ahead of the prime minister during his public meeting at Ajmer on Saturday.

“Chief minister has appointed a high-level committee to discuss on demands of the employees, however, it’s our responsibility to ensure there is no interruption during the prime minister’s visit,” said home minister Rajasthan government, Gulab Chand Kataria on Friday.

The government decision has come to further anguish of agitating employees and they decided to burn the orders of ‘pay cut’ and effigy of the officials to have passed upon the orders. They resolved to make their demand heard at the PM visit too. 

“We will reach Ajmer on Saturday morning to attend the prime minister’s event and will hold demonstration at Jaipur in evening by burning the orders released,” said state president of the ministerial employee federation Manoj Saxena.

State government has put the police and district administration on alert for a possible protest of employees and continued to reach a consensus on the issue. The state government to have initially attempted to pacify the employees reflected upon toughening its stand after marathon talks between ministerial committee and employee representatives ended inconclusive past Thursday midnight. 

“Discussions with the agitating employees have continued till 1 AM, but it should not be considered as weakness. The government will only accept a demand if it is justified and not under pressure of any strike,” said chief secretary DB Gupta.

Clarifying on government’s stand after a marathon meeting between employee representatives and high-level committee, the chief secretary indicated of an agreement to have been reached on certain demand. He though clearly ruled out the ‘unfeasible’ demands. 

There are more than a dozen of the government department including the ministerial and roadways employees that have been on agitation over various demands. The employee associations are in a haste to have the demands met before the model code of conduct comes in implementation and have added to the state government’s difficulties as state closes in towards assembly elections.
