Zila Gorakhpur: Film on mob lynching, 'Hindu terrorism' dropped after row

A film on the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, mob lynching and Hindu Terrorism -- Zila Gorakhpur -- was shut in boxes even before being shot when the poster of the proposed film, which was released on Sunday, stoked a controversy.

Vinod Tiwari, the Director of the Film, on Sunday released the first poster of his proposed film Zila Gorakhpur, based on the mob lynching and Saffron terrorism. The film would also show the rise of a saffron monk from Gorakhnath Peeth to the coveted office of the Chief Minister of India’s most populated state of Uttar Pradesh.

Released by Tiwari’s company Nostrum Entertainment, the poster shows a saffron-clad man standing with his back carrying a pistol. It also contains pictures of the world-famous Gorakhanth temple of Nath sect in the background and a cow-calf standing next to the saffron monk.

The poster immediately went viral on the social media drawing the attention of the BJP State leaders. Senior BJP leader IP Singh not only charged the Director of the film with distorting the image of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath but lodged an FIR against Director Vinod Tiwari at Vibhuti Khand Police Station in Gomtinagar on Sunday night.

“Vinod ji, we will not allow this film to be released. It was an attempt to foment communal trouble and divide people to earn quick money and cheap publicity. We also demand to probe who was funding the film director to produce this controversial film,” tweeted the senior BJP leader.

After lodging an FIR Singh said that an attempt was being made by the Director of the film to depict the Hindu culture, Nath Sect and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in poor light by glorifying mob lynching and Hindu terrorism. “I have a strong objection of Director using the words like mob lynching and Hindu terrorism,’ said Singh.

Startled by sharp reactions from the BJP leaders and on social media, the Director of the controversial film Zila Gorakhpur late Sunday night announced to drop the idea of making the film.

“After seeing reactions on the social media over poster released, I have decided to drop my new film ‘Zila Gorakhpur’. The decision to close the project was taken in public and national interest. I had no intentions to hurt public sentiments. The film was unnecessarily dragged into the controversy which was uncalled for as there was nothing controversial in the proposed film,” announced Vinod Tiwari on his decision to close the film.
