Narmada SP sees red as cops caught helping bootleggers
There are many loopholes in Gujarat that allow liquor to enter the state illegally. One such hole came to the fore on Tuesday, where cops were caught facilitating bootleggers.
Narmada district superintendent of police (SP) Mahendra Bagaria wrote a letter addressing all the Deputy SPs and inspectors expressing his disappointment over the incident.
Bagaria wrote: "It has come to my notice local crime branch police and special operation groups cooperate with bootleggers to allow illicit liquor trade in the district. They do not raid bootleggers or their dens, and instead, help them run their trade. We have taken note of the call details of all the police officers and their nexus with bootleggers was exposed. Those involved in such a crime will be penalised."
"I have also come to know that police vehicles provide pilot protection to vehicles of bootleggers; they move ahead of their vehicles to give protection. Weak supervision by Deputy SPs in this district is responsible for this. The bootleggers have been running their business with hidden permission from LCBs and SOGs," Bagaria wrote in letter.
The SP also wrote that he would not tolerate these anymore and would start conducting raids himself in the future and also take action against the cops. He instructed all the cops to stop liquor trade in their territory with immediate effect.
