Panel scraps AMC chief's proposal

The Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday scrapped a proposal pitched by the municipal commissioner to bypass the eight major committees for work allotment which are more than Rs 50 lakh. However, it has doubled the expenditure powers of the commissioner from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, that too without riders.

Section 73 of Gujarat Municipal Provincial Act, 1949, gives power to the commissioner to execute contracts on behalf of the corporation. Under this section, the commissioner earlier had the power to spend up to Rs 15 lakh without prior permission of the Standing Committee in case of emergency, which has been doubled now. Moreover, the committee has dropped the emergency clause as well.
