Rajasthan: Ticket snub leaves bad taste in district presidents mouths

Rajasthan BJP seems to be besieged by unending problems during the rundown to elections. Adding to its already mounting woes is resentment among its district presidents after the party’s decision to not consider them for tickets. A large number of these district presidents have communicated to the party that they wish to contest elections and are willing to leave their posts for this.

The rumblings have been growing for the last few days prompting senior functionaries of state BJP to speak to them. The district presidents have communicated their sentiments. They have emphatically told the party that in a situation when most MLAs would not get tickets, they hope to put forth their candidature.

“We have been working in the organisation for four and a half years in the hope that we would get tickets. This decision of not considering us for tickets is unacceptable. I have told the party leaders that I am willing to leave the post of district president,” said a district president who did not wish to be named.

“The party says tickets will be given to karykartas; we too are karyakartas and the best ones the party has. If we not considered who will be,” said another district president on condition of anonymity.

Speaking to DNA state general secretary Bhajanlal Sharma said, “Every party worker nurses aspirations to contest election. They have been working for the party and cannot be blamed for such aspirations. But our post holders will contest only if the party gives them a ticket.” He however refused to confirm that several leaders offered to leave the post to be able to fight elections. The present situation is tricky for the BJP as around 25 district presidents have expressed a wish to contest elections. At the organisation level BJP has divided Rajasthan into 41 districts and thus almost two thirds are not happy with the party decision.

A replacement of all these district presidents would necessitate a reelection process that would take over twelve weeks. This is simply not possible before elections. This puts forth a situation where BJP is faced with two options. Either it reconsiders its decision or else it faces elections in a situation where most district presidents are upset.

All Is Not Well
