Odhav building collapse: 15 more units at risk, find engineers
According to a report by structural engineers, 15 more units in the Odhav government colony are risky and unsafe. However, as of now, the civic body has served notice to a total of seven units.
"There 15 more units which are risky and unsafe. The structural engineer has given this report," said a senior AMC official.
The civic body, on Friday, had started demolition of five units, the residents of which had been served notice on Tuesday. After two building units collapsed, killing one person on Sunday in the Odhav government housing scheme, the civic body had initiated a survey on Monday to check the stability of the remaining building units in the same colony.
It was found on Tuesday that there are five more units which are risky and unsafe to stay in. Serving a notice immediately to vacate the building units to its occupants, the AMC also disconnected the water supply when the occupants refused to evacuate. With the help of the police, civic officials sealed off the five units on Wednesday.
Residents, however, are agitating against the move and have refused to leave without alternate options. Some of them have been shifted to the nearest rain basera while some have taken shelter at their relatives' houses.
"This move by the AMC is not acceptable. We have not been allowed to enter our own houses. They are even refusing to let us take our belongings. We don't have anything. Why is the AMC not agreeing to provide alternate shelter?" asked a resident of the Odhav government colony. "A total of 96 houses have been demolished today and the families are on the road. The commissioner is not giving us time to meet for representation?" Solanki raised questions.
